David Kramer, Wildekat
David Kramer is a historic figure in South African traditional folk. Wildekat is built around a riel dance: a girl who dances like a wildekat, wildly charismatic, and the dance moving through her community. Jody Abrahams produced. I edited it.

Challenge & solution
Cutting dance is its own discipline. The footwork is the performance, so you have to stay wide enough and long enough for people to actually see it, while the song is asking you to cut. Get greedy with the coverage and you chop the dancer’s legs out of her own number. The answer here was to let the riel run, and to use the community around her — the watching, the reaction, the place — for everything else.
This was one of several videos from that run of David’s album, and it’s one I love. It’s fun and it’s lively and it’s genuinely of somewhere. Jody Abrahams produced it. I edited.
The discipline
This one came through music videos. Concept to delivery for labels and independent artists.
